Home Front Book Review

Description from the back of the book: In her bestselling novels Kristin Hannah has plumped the depths of friendship, the loyalty of sisters, and the secrets mothers keep. Now, in her most emotionally powerful story yet, she explains the intimate landscape of troubled marriage with provocative and timely portrait of a husband and wife, in love at war. Like many couples Michael and Jolene Zarkades have to face the pressures of every day life --children, careers, bills, chores--even as their twelve-year marriage is falling apart. Then an unexpected deployment sends Jolene deep into harm's way and leaves defense attorney Michael at home, unaccustomed to being a single parent to their two girls. As a mother, it agonizes Jolene to leave her family, but as a soldier she has always understood the true meaning of duty, In her letters home, she paints a rose colored version of her life on the front lines, shielding her family from the truth. But war will change Jolene in ways that none of them could have foreseen. When tragedy strikes. Michael must face his darkest fear and fight a battle of his own -- for everything that matters to his family.

Southern Mama's Bookshelf Review: Home Front by Kristin Hannah brought out all kinds of emotions out of me. At one point I was crying so bad I had to put the book down to get myself together. I read this thick book in two and a half days. Trigger warning you must have a box of tissues. Also this book talks about deployment, war, and being in a military family. The mother Jolene is a part of the United States Army. Jolene is married to Michael who is a defense lawyer. They have two children Betsy and LuLu. While reading this book you get to see the ups and downs of raising a preteen and a soon to be preschooler while serving her country and dealing with a broken marriage. Jolene and Michael's marriage is on the rocks to the point that even divorce is being brought up until Jolene gets the call that she is getting deployed. Stress becomes even worse for Jolene because the thought of leaving her family when they need her the most is destroying her.  One thing I liked about the book was we got to see each person's point of view. Kristin Hannah made sure to keep us wanting more with each chapter. I highly recommend Home and Front. Definitely five out of five stars for this book!
